Natural Tunnel State Park
In the 1880's the famous statesman William Jennings Bryan declared Natural Tunnel the "Eighth Wonder of the World," Natural Tunnel has attracted sightseers from all parts of the country. It is said Daniel Boone was among the first explorers to see the tunnel and it was an area well known to the local Indians and hunters prior to that. Natural Tunnel is believed to be about 1 million years old and started forming during the early part of the Pleistocene Epoch. Listed below are a few of the attractions offered at Natural Tunnel State Park:

Bristol Motor Speedway
Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee is located about 1 hour from Appalachian Mountain Cabins. Stay in the peaceful mountains out of the hustle and bustle of the race crowds, but still enjoy the famous Spring and Fall races at BMS.

Carter Fold
The Carter Fold is located in Hiltons, VA about 45 minutes from Appalachian Mountain Cabins. The Carter Fold holds music shows every Saturday night at 7:30 pm and is home to the Carter Family Museum, A.P. Carter Store and the A.P. Carter Cabin and Birthplace.

The Crooked Road
The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail, winds through the mountains of Southwest Virginia. Here, the Bluegrass, Old Time, and Traditional Country music is as beautiful and rugged as the landscape itself.


Clinch River
The Clinch River flows through some scenic gorges and has sweeping mountain views. Some sections contain Class I to III rapids. The river offers canoeing, kayaking, and fishing for smallmouth and muskies. The Nature Conservancy has designated the river as one of the "Last Great Places" in America because it is home to protected species of mussels.
High Knob Recreation and Observation Area
The High Knob area has a four-acre cold water lake for fishing and swimming. The hiking trail leads to an observation tower with a four-state view. At an elevation of 3,800 feet, High Knob Recreation Area is the highest campground in the Clinch Ranger District of the Jefferson National Forest. The main attraction at the site is High Knob Lake, a four-acre cold water lake with a 300-ft. sand-swimming beach. A small amphitheater is located on a hillside behind the beach house. The lake is stocked and fishing is permitted with a Virginia license and a Forest Service Stamp.
